Well Dressed Man

I always thought my husband's style was predictable, conservative, and monotone..... but apparently with the right encouragement it isn't any of those things.

His wardrobe used to be so predictable. He liked one brand. He liked three colors. He liked one style. He liked one print. Not much to get excited about. If I was inclined to buy something for him I am confident that I could make a purchase that he would love, but how many things do you need that look alike? He has actually bought the same shirt twice on accident. He really liked it.

Have I ever purchased anything for him, without him? No. He doesn't really have need for clothes - he wears scrubs and a suit.

I take that back. Before our honeymoon, 9 years ago, I bought him a shirt in the same style that he usually wears with a subtle Hawaiian print. He never wore it. It was out of the norm. Eventually he just donated it to Goodwill. That is the last time I bought something without him.

A few years ago while visiting Chicago I managed to convince him to buy something new at J.Crew. I was tired of looking at the same clothes every time we went out. And you know what?  He looked great! But now the problem was he only had this one outfit that was out of the mold. We are talking way out of the mold. Different color palette, same shirt style, and a sweater. A sweater!

Fast-forward three (or four) years and all of a sudden he likes to shop, and the brand he used to wear is no longer "him". What is happening?

I think it started with that interview tie from Neiman Marcus. And then the conference in Vegas when he had some extra time to wander (and wonder) around the shopping centers. Now he is walking through his favorite store without even picking up anything to look at. I think I saw him actually snub his nose at them. Now he has been seduced by Tommy Bahama.

But such a departure from his regular wardrobe? He doesn't wear pattern! He doesn't wear pastels! Could this be a mid-life crisis? Maybe this has been him all along and he has just discovered it.

He looks great in the clothes and even has some jeans now that aren't blue:-)

He has essentially doubled the size of his wardrobe in two shopping trips. It wasn't very large to begin with. And he tells me that now he has things he can take me out in. I guess I have some dates in my future. I may be seduced by Tommy Bahama too!

  1. I think all men secretly care about clothes as much as women but don't justify the money on them. Good to see a sharp dressed man walking around the house I'm sure!

    1. He looked pretty good taking a nap on Sunday. It is nice to see something on him other than the same things I have been looking at for the last 9 years. The change of view is nice.

  2. I love it when men "discover" clothes and then start dressing well. Enjoy your handsome Tommy Bahama!

    1. I think those clothes would look great in the Bahamas.... wonder how I can convince him to try that?

  3. When we met, Doc H wore only Dockers and Levi's. Today, it's designer all the way! All his shirts, suits, and pants are bought, then tailored. God forbid there is a little "extra fabric between his shoulders". He doesn't shop frequently, but when he does... STAND BACK! Otherwise you might succumb to the smoke which billows from his credit card when he does shop.
Sometimes, I feel like a slob when we go out to dinner. He is always so well dressed!

    1. I have a feeling he could be dangerous if left to his own devices. He has expensive tastes and apparently has been a superstar suppressing his desires. We haven't made it to the tailor, but I have a feeling that may be coming. One of his friends who starting practicing a year or two ago has turned into a designer snob using the excuse that "his patients expect it".... hmmmm, convenient excuse. My husband won't have that excuse, his patients won't be of that variety.

  4. Hahaha! My husband is like yours used to be. He has 5 work shirts, all the same brand, just in different colors. 3 pairs of work pants, all the same exact pair. Then he has 2 pairs of jeans (same ones) a bunch of black t-shirts, and ONE shirt that he calls his "going out shirt" so whenever we see friends or go out to dinner or something, he wears that shirt. Our friends probably think he has no clothes, because they always see him in the same shirt. He also has some sweats that he wears around the house. That is the extent of his wardrobe. I've tried as well to get him in some other things, but so far no luck.... but your hubby now has colored jeans!?!? Oh my gosh I can't even imagine my husband in colored jeans :) So funny the sudden change!

    1. It is hard to tell in pictures what year it is because he always wears exactly the same style/colors/brand. Thank heavens I can use my hair to figure out at least a general idea!

  5. This is too funny!! My husband is still in the category of one style! He recently cleaned out his closet and picked a number for how many items he wanted. For example, 8 polo shirts, 10 button downs, 3 dress pants... It was hysterical!

    1. I am pretty sure before this last weekend my husband had almost that exact wardrobe. 5 polos white or navy, 2 dockers, 6 button downs, 2 jeans, and 2 suits - and then workout clothes (I don't count those).

  6. Love this! My husband definitely has a "type" that he likes and just wears a variation of that whenever he's not in scrubs. It's hard to push them out of they're comfort zone, but slowly I am getting him to add 1 or 2 nice grown-up pieces to his wardrobe!

  7. introduce him to trunk club....right up his alley. this post is incredibly FUNNY. my husband thinks he is stylish because he has five sweaters and two jeans. We rotate the sweaters for date night. But hold on....he's got 6 pairs of sweat pants and every picture of him with the kids is a dirty white undershirt with either sweat pants, basketball shorts or those nasty ass scrubs full of MRSA. I am his personal stylist. We stick to Macys and Brooks Brother's for now. I can't imagine what will happen when he has $. When we first met he had a BLUE button down shirt. The only way you know we took pictures on various days of the summer is because my outfits were different. I kid you not he thought it was "cool" and "okay" to wear that ONE blue shirt all the damn time (and it was not always clean because God forbid we go out Friday AND Saturday night.....) This post is super cute and funny. Take a picture PLEASE from the neck down so as to keep your anonymity. I've got to see some of these outfits!!!:)

    1. I think medical school and residency can dull a person's fashion sense! I have been looking at the same polos since I met him! I may have to go deep into the archives and put together a photo collage:-)

  8. My hubs loves Tommy Bahama too! The clothes make him feel "relaxed" and while it is a little pricey it is worth it to me to get him a few staple pieces from there to help him feel more relaxed during these tough years!
